The Forgotten Community of Mcfarland

Not far from Turtletown Tennessee, a few miles above the Lost Creek camp ground are the remains of Mcfarland. No buildings survive with the exception of a concrete structure built around the 1940’s. It was part of the Over Hill communities in south eastern Tennessee from the late 1700’s until the mid to late 1940’s when the last known resident passed away. Butler Cemetery remains along with its seemingly long forgotten residents. Nothing of a Church is there near the Butler sight. My grand parents were married in Mcfarland during the great depression era. They described an old Church standing near Butler Cemetery yet after exploring the sight we found literally nothing, only a small clearing which is large enough for a structure.

One could spend a couple of days exploring the full site and we plan to return to the area to do just that. The TVA sight is part of the Hiwassee water shed, the building that remains is believed to be a crane that most likely lifted supplies from the railroad below. The area is rich in ore and fresh water is available behind the closed door or just filtered from the spring as is comes straight from the mountain. The sight pictured is believed to be a pumping station that supplied water to the community below that bordered the railroad and the Hiwassee river.

We will have more on the site when we return in the early spring of 2018. Camping is available a few miles from the sight in Lost Creek. The forest road is passable with any vehicle, however to get to the actual site one would need a four wheel drive or just take a short hike.

There is no cellular connection available and FM signals are very weak. For entertainment on your stay go prepared with a CB or HAMM radio, XM satellite radio works well in every area if your vehicle is equipped. The camp sight offers no fresh water or any type of hook ups, the road is narrow so if you take a trailer or camper use extreme caution Tent camping is recommended or a narrow off road camper.

The exact site has been uploaded and is available on Google maps for directions. If you have questions or more information, or see out way point on All Trails. please feel free to contact us.
